First Cell Phone?!?!

I kid you not. You read that correctly. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I had never owned a cell phone. Ever.

At first it was because I didn't want to pay for one. This was back in the mid-late 90's when I was hard at work at my first (and only) job out of college.

Then I realized I didn't really like talking on the phone that much, so I didn't see the point.

Logistically, they were a challenge to keep track of since I also don't carry a purse.

Once the smart phones came out, it seemed like many people were on their phones all the time, and missing what was going on around them. Or ignoring the person sitting across from them at the table.

Most recently, it was a sort of identity. I was the only person everyone knew who didn't have a cell phone.

So what changed? Well now that my kids are getting older and more independent, it's getting more challenging to stay in contact with everyone I need to. And I did start feeling bad that the 12 year-old was the only one in his grade without a phone (sadly, that's not an exaggeration). It was fairly easy to deny his incessant requests for a phone, however. "I don't have one and I'm 45 years old. Why would you need one?" : )

Anyway, here is the scrapbook page I made in honor of this most recent life change.

This page is on the Winnie & Walter blog if you'd like to see more details.

Thanks for looking!

  1. Kelly! I love this post. Yay for you and your boy:) Your layout is FABulous.
Honestly, I don't like talking on the phone either but texting is good. It is a good way to stay in contact with kids in college...lots of face timing with my boy that goes to college in ny.

  2. What a wonderful post and congratulations to you and your son! I love your layout as it captures what is a really big change for you. I do not like talking on the phone but I like the ability to message/text especially with my kids, my husband who works in the states and more recently with my Mom! Enjoy it!

  3. I was a hold-out too, until last August, when we were between homes so no land-line and lots of calls to realtor, mother in assisted living, etc. I have kept it, despite having the landline now, but rarely use it (I can go more than a week without charging!), and I still don't text. I love that you made a scrapbook page out of the event!

  5. I agree about people spending too much time on their phones but not being a telephone person myself the texting feature is priceless. I can keep in touch with people on the spur of the moment for me but at their convenience to answer. Plus I love being about to take photos. I used to keep mine in my back pocket until I got the 6 Plus. It's big but I still carry it there sometimes.

  6. Kelly....you might be leaving me alone as the only person who doesn't own a cell phone! I do have to admit it is getting harder and harder. I have resisted for all the same reasons as you have....but like Martha, I am likely to move in the near future and may be forced...we will see...
